Ph0toN 33
Very cool. I would say this had to have developed mainly out of boogaloo, but I saw aspects from several other dance forms involved in it as well, plus some completely new stuff I've never seen before. It's definitely unique. I love watching the evolution of new dance styles. Thanks for sharing.
Tico 24
WTF Honestly, respect for that guy and everyone who is able to do this in a decent fashion. Cheers
spazzman 1
Wow. His footwork blew me away. I'm not sure if the inconsistency of his waves is what defines it as "flexing", but his hits were clean enough that it was impressive, and didn't come across as sloppy. In highschool I learned to do this, which eventually ended up biting me in the ass because I realized I would rather complete my waves, but it used to be called "brook-up". I could see some areas where he needed work, but a few of his glides were really really sick. And that segment around 3:14ish was unique, at least for me. Aden maybe you could clarify a little bit what exactly the "flexing" part is?
Aden 3
I'll be sure to post a history as soon as I find the proper resources. I would say this had to have developed mainly out of boogaloo, but I saw aspects from several other dance forms involved in it as well, plus some completely new stuff I've never seen before. It's definitely unique. I love watching the evolution of new dance styles. Thanks for sharing. You are correct sir. Boogaloo is definitely a major influence for a lot of the flexers I've met as well as plenty of other dance forms. I'll be adding some of my favorite vids to the OP.

Luminous 2
Yeah man! Aden and I are actually starting to incorporate some of this into our styles, it's freaking amazing the amount of flexibility and options you have when doing this!
cynicdave 37
I saw the videos but i don't see anything new personally. Azzie 1
Thank you for posting that video Jlayne, it did bring up some of the history of it. While the US had b-boys and poppers and lockers we in the west indies had Bruk Up. We used dancehall and reggae beats to color our moves and dancehall battle dances became Bruk Up which as the video said is a way of saying Breaking Up which is descriptive of what these guys and some girls did with their bodies. What defines Bruk up and now Flexing is the body contortion mixed in with everything. The pretense is to do something to your body or get an angle that a "normal" person wouldn't be able to do do, or that would hurt them because they aren't accustomed to putting their body in those positions. Bruk up became story telling battle dancing when battling became the norm. So basically people would do things like simulating eating your head, grabbing your balls and batting them away etc through dancing and while the battle itself was a battle the story telling inside of the battle became more insulting than losing the battle itself. Flexing is the evolution of Bruk Up (mainly in Brooklyn because there's a huge west indian and hip hop influence there) with popping, gliding, breaking, contorting and other dance forms. It's very free flow with few "rules". It has the potential to evolve further, being from that culture; the original generation that Bruk Up came from; I can't wait to see it go further. It would be very interesting to see this mated with Krumping. Aden can you find some vids of old school Bruk Up for a comparison?

FreakDeke 17
il never forget when i first met the professor in the city. Such a cool guy. and an amazing Imagination. Everytime he Flexs he thinks about the Liquid bad guy from Terminator 2. That is he's inspiration. Flexing is defff an interesting dance.
illezt 2
flexing is pretty tight... was never really get into it though-- although I love Brooklyn styles (bone breaking, hat tricks, etc) let's get an EC dance meetup going! we have enough people that are into funk/urban styles I think... maybe expand our genre and find some new ways to incorporate stuff into sticking? Genecrazy 2
what i know about flexing from the videos i have seen is that there are lots of tricks..contortions/flexible movements, and has a lot of influence of popping and various popping styles without "hits" another thing i also notice is i dont see anyone on beat...theyre just moving..not exactly..dancing.
