Nordic Track aka Old School Candy Walk

It seems very few people have heard of this dance style, but it was one of the dominant styles back in late 90s, early 2000s. I remember doing this in middle school. =_=

I recently found a few videos on YouTube (including a tutorial on the basics) and I recall a few people asking for that, so here you go!

Special thanks goes to those who made the videos.

Thanks Zinny!!

I was surprised how far back this style actually goes...I only heard about it within the past year.

The end result of the tutorial vid is very similar to the NYC stomp which is what attracted me to research about this style in the first place.

Zin...we gotta make a vid of the "lazy" shuffle/stomp. lolol

I still wish I could figure out what the dance everyone was doing was called when I got into the scene in early 01. All these stomping / shuffling / gliding type dances are similar but I've still yet to see a video of what I remember. I was hoping this would be it but it's not.

Edit: I might actually have some footage of myself doing what I'm talking about from the security camera I had in my apartment back then. I'll have to go digging and see if I do. Basically what it looked like was taking a giant leap with one foot and when it came down you glided back on it, then did it with the next foot while standing on the ball of the previous foot. Nearly a decade later and I can't even come close to doing it anymore lol.

We should all chip in for a Nordic Track/Stomping Video. What do you all think?

so,, I'm trying to learn this,, and I keep feeling a bit more strain on my front foot than my back,, is that normal? or any tips on how to fix this?

btw, I have zero dancing experience (besides glowsticking) so it could be something really really basic, or just supposed to happen :P

Sounds like you're putting more weight on your front foot; as the video states, try leaning backwards a bit and work on timing so there's not as much weight on the front.

Remember, you're kind of trying to make it look like you're running in place (like on a nordic track), so the weight should be off the front foot as it slides to the back.

  • 1 year later...

Back in the day (1995-1997), I had only heard of this as "the march" from a rave-going friend who used to be really, really good (he always had an impressed crowd around him at parties). I think he was just born with dancing in his blood. Anyway, I like seeing the more refined versions of "candywalking" where no matter what the tempo is or how hard the person is stomping, it appears as though they're GLIDING. It looks similar to the moon walk in a way, in that it's like the person is walking on air or a REALLY, REALLY greasy floor :) and so he/she keeps "slipping" along the ground. The best moves are the ones that appear effortless. 15 years later and I'm still not as good as my aforementioned friend. Doh!!! I'd love to see a good video done by someone really experienced and skilled who can describe how to do this in a step-by-step fashion.

Anyway, here's a YT video of one of my faves. Her name is Maggie:
