I've been seing a lot of members' kandi and threads about it, and well, I've been wondering: what exactly is the meaning behind it? I went to wikipedia in order to search for it, but I thought it'd be a lot better and more interesting if I could hear about it from people who make and use it. I've never been too good at wearing bracelets, necklaces or things like that, but this seems different, somehow. I'd love to hear any experiences that you've had about it //_^'.

it really depends on the person your asking, as there are many different definitions of kandi.

Im my opinion, Kandi is an ice breaker. All it really is is a way for ravers to connect to each other and make friends, all just by trading kandi. The majority of people i know in my area, was due to trading with them.

to define "trading", all it is is swapping bracelets from each other. How its normally done is a person asks if they want to trade, and if the other person agrees, they hold hands. one person takes a peice and slides it down onto the other persons wrist, and vice versa. I always add in a high 5 or a hug afterwards, but its that simple. All it really does is it gets you to introduce yourself to people and involve yourself into the scene.

som peices of kandi can have meaning behind it, or hold a special memory. One of my alltime favorite peices is a bracelet made of pink beads and butterfly beads. reason being is because at one event i went to, it got raided. once we left, me and my brother went to IHOP and randomly met a couple that were there at the rave. they were THE most amazing people i have ever met, and i will never forget that night. Unfortunatly i did not get any of their contact info so when the girl that i met gave me the peice, and I wear it high on my arm, so that if we ever cross paths again, they can remember who they gave it to, and we can meet again.

i explained it to a non-raver at disneyland one time (at raverday) that theyre like friendship bracelets.. when we meet someone we trade to remember them, then i pointed out a few significant ones i got from best friends, first parties, stuff like that

for some people its a cheap accessory (but in all seriousness, if you were to add up the money ive spent on beads it would definitely be in the hundreds so its not that cheap) some people see it as just a fashion statement and think "the more beads i have, the more awesome i am!" but in my opinion kandi is worthless unless there is a story or a face behind it.

trance-rckr!!! i wanna show u how a ton of us trade kandi out here =] its a little different... ill try and explain it...

step one: each person throws up peace signs and touches the two fingers (peace)

step two: make a heart (love)

step 3: palms together (unity)

step 4: "hold hands" fingers lace together (like normal trading) (respect)

step 5: trade kandi

(step 6.. i do it but not everyone): high 5 (responsibility)

and then hugs and squeals as people see their kandi

haha yeah quoted for emphasis

the whole PLUR thing (peace love unity respect) while trading kandi is a big part of the whole scene

Every piece of kandi is unique in some way, they almost tell stories =)

you can tell a lot about someone from their kandi, especially people who have rave-specific kandi (for example one that says EDC for electric daisy carnival or HSII for How Sweet It Is to show they went)

i have alot of kandi but there are only a few from a couple of my really good friends that i wear everywhere.

I like to think of it as a reminder that there are people that really do appreciate my friendship.

I wear those certain kandi's in uniform EVERYWERE.

I think that is what having kandi is supposed to mean.

To remind you of your loved ones.

:dope Never seen this before and it's by far the most creative method yet! I need to trade kandi with some people like you. And on a side note, I always wear the kandi that's been given to me on my right arm and kandi I've made on my left. So when I trade, I let people grab from the left side so I can keep my memories on the right.

i've met a few foreign ravers, and they've said that the whole kandE trading thing is an american thing. i met one guy from spain, and another from puerto rico, who both claimed that kandE trading isn't something they do in their countries.

just throwing that little piece of knowledge out there.

Well you also have to consider that the Rave culture really only started in Britain and the U.S. and then from there it spread. (Things like Storm Raves etc.)

It's not really "kandE" either but rather just "kandi"

The emphasis on the E I'm guessing is some attempt at an Ecstasy reference?

There are tons of sober raves, and kandi is in no way shape or form related to Ecstasy and Ecstasy use. Sure, there are pieces of kandi that have things like "XTC" or "X" or "E" or "ROLLIN' HARD" on them, but those are specific cases of kandi.

tl;dr

rave culture mainly stemmed from U.S. and British raves so of course other countries are going to be different, and kandi does not equate ecstasy use.

i love this way of trading !!!

i have to start this trend in the colorado scene it represents plur so well !

Kandi to me is not a fashion statement but its a meaning

every kandi i wear daily represents my connection to the culture

it reminds me who i am where im from where ive been

who ive met and most important who was there with me

its also art in its own perspective showing neat symbols

to either meet new people or introduce someone new to the culture

its just ... kandi

I always thought this was the way it was done.....KNOWLEDGE WIN! Can't wait to actually do this when I actually trade kandi lol

if u watch videos of sensation black/sensation white theres no kandi... atleast that i could see

Love both of them specially black though. The reason why there is no kandi is due to the dress code of all white or black (you figure out which goes to which lol) and well a pure white kandi or pure black kandi...would be extremely dull thus.....none there. (This is just what I am thinking.)

wow, a lot of methods and techniques.... so many stories... I've never seen it myself actually. The closest thing to a kandi raver I have is my friend KittyKream //_^' Can you use any color, for example if I wanted to make like a full black with some red beads to contrast, would it be ok?

@FEAR: yeah, sensation black/white have the dress code, but perhaps accesories are an extra? I've seen plenty of glowstickers in there

thats funny because i was asked once how its spelled, and i said K-A-N-D-I, and the guy laughed and said it was originally kandE, and that you could always tell old and new ravers apart by how they spelled the word. so i just call it kandE, for tradition's sake i guess.

it doesn't really matter if people show up to raves sober, but they are missing out on a huge part of the "rave experience". raves are made to appeal to people on drugs. the whole culture is based around ecstasy and designing lights, clothes, and items to exploit its effects, so i'm sure kandE originially had some connection to ecstasy, even if you think it doesn't anymore.

Like I said in my other post. You can use what ever colors you want. A week ago I made a rainbowish cuff (pics are in the kandi section) There are no set rules on what colors you have to use or even how you do it. Each kandi you make is suppose to be unique.

From wikipedia for (Sensation) Black

All attendees are required to dress completely in black

So like I said....there can't be any colors aside from all white/black

Glowsticks are not a clothing item so that means they don't have to be black or white. Although if they somehow figured out how to make a black glowstick that you could see...that would be pimpin'

sure i guess if thats how the guy does stuff

but nowadays most people spell it kandi and even if it originally had some ecstasy connotations it doesn't necessarily have them anymore

All you need to buy is pony beads and string. As for string a lot of people like to strechmagic because as the name implies it stretches.

For beads you can go where ever that sells them. I like creative wholesales.

http://www.creativewholesale.com/

String I just buy from Jo-ann fabrics. Then you can read some tutorials.
