Kandi Kontest!

Recommended Posts

Hey all you kandi lovers! I've got a quest for you to jump on board for... or some other thing that's not so lame... umm... yea!

Ok! so i'd like to run a small kandi kontest (clever name, i know). i ran this past Lira long ago but i figure we still go for it. Here's how it'll work.

-There will be a seperate category for each style of kandi (single, double, etc).

-you may only enter one piece in each category, but may be a part of any number of categories.

-you will make an original piece for the contest. you MUST take a picture when it isn't yet completed with a small namesign. this is to prove it's original for the contest and your own.

-then you take a picture of the finished piece, showing it as best you can in all it's kandi goodness.

-send all the pictures (the half completed pieces + name sign and the finished piece) to me and for which category it will be entered in. please host your own pics and send me links through PM.

after i close the contest, the pictures will be posted in a poll to have GSC members vote for the best! this should be all confidential, so please don't say which is yours! the winners of each category will win points. if there are more than 5 entries in any given category, a 2nd place prize will be awarded.

Single: 250 top prize

Double (two singles): 500 top prize

Phattie: 750 top prize

Wormie: 500 top prize

Ladder: 750 top prize

Multi: 1000

Cuff: 1000

Small 3D: 1000

Large 3D: 2000

Necklace: 1000

There is also one more category! Your kandi pic! Wear as much kandi as you can/want, put on the UFO's or kandikini and send the pic on over! the picture voted best will get 1000 points!!!

Contest is open! feel free to send in your submissions at any point! I will close this on FRIDAY THE 27th at first. pending participation, some catergories may remain open for awhile longer, or the whole thing extended. Enjoy! have fun!

PLUR!

mmmmm, Imma agree with alouette. I feel that we need to follow a no competition ideal, which includes all areas of our scene.

On top of that, alot of people here on GSC want to make kandi but dont know how. As I have said before i am working on som video tutorials on how to make kandi, as well as where to buy supplies and what not.

I will be more than happy to take some pics of my work to show, but I dont want to go against anyone else's kandi. We all make unique and wonderful peices and its hard to judge em :)

Its not a serious thing you guys, calm downn. I agree there shouldn't be one because of our culture but whats the harm in a lil friendly contest amongst our selves? Besides this contest could inspire some really memorable kandi.

Just have fun with it and take it lightly, don't be so serious about it. I think its an INNOCENT idea that will only happen ONCE just for FUN.

Maybe instead of a contest this could become a sort of showroom?

ok, i should have posted this from the begining because i knew people would see it this way. but it's a friendly contest. It's not like i'm having you send me all the kandi and the winner gets all the kandi someone made, like they do over at kandi trade. it was meant for a way to show off your kandi and have a little fun. make yourself something pretty and maybe win some points (which do virtually nothing on this site). It was meant for fun, not to say "you're an elitest." you all pretty much do that anyway with flora.

i get the whole battling thing with glowsticking and not to do it in public. but you wear kandi in public and not just at raves, don't you? kandi =/= glowsticking. i love soccer with all my heart, and i hate when people use it just to show off how good they are and be popular (which does happen mind you), but it's a game with a winner and a loser. you may think that's a terrible example, but it's the same basic thing: something people can come together to just mess around and have fun, like a pick up game that will still have a winner and loser, or a championship game.

Another reason i posted this was try to show the scene and community of kandi making and kandi kids. I intended to help out those who needed it if they asked for it. perhaps i should have explained that but i just didn't add it in. i don't see what's so wrong with friendly competetion. everyone here sees a simple game as a terrible thing, just because battling is bad with glowsticking. it reminds me of a TV show i saw once where the one mother and father never allowed their kids to play games: races at the park, sports, board games, etc. because then someone had to lose. and their kids were MESSED UP because of it. they felt threatened in any situation where they might have to compete. you can't live like that, whether you live PLUR or not, so just take a breather! it's fun! it wasn't meant to put someone on a pedastal, cause like i said, there's already someone there. it was just supposed to be fun and to inspire each other for new ideas. I know i browse throuhg endless amounts of pictures of kandi and just get idea after idea that the only thing stopping me is the amount of string i have. it was supposed to be fun. i guess games just aren't acceptable here if they have a winner and loser.

this all may sound like i'm upset, and i am a. so if this topic upsets you, i'm sorry. but i feel totally disrespected and making me feel like shit and that i don't give a damn about the culture. It was never my goal to hand someone a scepter and say "play God." It was supposed to be FUN. I believe and love PLUR and kandi more than anything in life since it came into my life, but that means we can't show off a little of our skill? isn't that what you do at a rave when you glowstick... give a show, or show off your abilities? it's practically what that "show off your kandi thread" is all about: SHOWING OFF which pieces you think are the best and your best for others to admire. if we shouldn't be running a friendly outting to show off, why wear it to anywhere but a rave, even a few singles to school or the mall?

and before you start ripping on me about how a contest doesn't follow PLUR, neither does soccer. and i LIVE by PLUR... it's not just a mindset or a thing to do at a rave, IT'S MY LIFE. that doesn't stop me from going out and pushing some guy into the mud if it means saving that game winning shot against me. I wanna win at that. i'm not unified on the field with my opponent, but we're all out to play the game, so we are unified. a contest out to have fun is all it was meant to be, not some role giving award ceremony. PLUR isn't being harmed by it at all. every piece of kandi is special, and in a contest, the ability come out to play to the HIGHEST degree instead of the feeling, or inside joke, or community with the person you're giving it to. that's what this contest was supposed to bring out; the ability of the craftsmanship, to praise each other, point out where someone can do better, and just overall enjoy watching each other's piece develop.

i remember the last kanditrade.net contest they had. i wasn't able to enter due to my newness to the site, but it was awesome to see all the different kinds of kandi that people really put their all into making, to really show their potential to the art. when you make a piece for yourself or someone in particular, sure you have your pieces that just SCREAM epicness, but otherwise it's usually a softer tone: something about and for the person you're giving it to. contests show skill and creativity: galleries show meaning. they have different purposes within the kandi culture, and i don't see anything wrong with either of them.

i was trying to bring out the KK a bit more on here. no one hardly everposts in the show off your kandi thread. the last person i traded with on here totally ripped me off about 20 singles worth. so bringing out a small subculture of raving, just like glowsticking, wasn't working by just posting up my own pictures because very few people responded to anything. and the one that did ripped me off.

so that being said, i love kandi and i love PLUR, just as i love God and glowsticking and soccer and writing and family and friends. I don't feel i've disrespected my beloved culture and i'd appreciate it if you didn't look down on me. perhaps my method wasn't perfect, but at least i tried to bring the community a bit tighter together. here on glowsticking, kandi isn't the focus and i get it. but we're so spread out, it's driving me crazy. i have NO friends who are kandi kids and i really wanted to bring some of us together somehow. like i mentioned, no one posts their pictures up. i've said i'm always open for trades and i've sent PMs to people and get no responses, or i get cheated out of a lot. this was just supposed to be a friendly gam, like soccer: people come together for a common goal. someone wins, someone loses, but i know i've never walked off the field feeling like i didn't connect closer with my team mates AND my opponent. and the next time i saw those opponents, it was even tighter knit, to the point that i've made friends with a few of my opponents over a single season.

Lastly, I never said there was "BAD OR UGLY KANDI" or that not all "kandi is beautiful and unique in its own special way." because it is. I never said only some people "make unique and wonderful peices" and it wouldn't be "hard to judge em" because they are and it would be. I only quoted those parts because its making me extremly upset (to the point i can't stop shaking right now and i feel like crying) because i feel so hurt that people think i don't love kandi and that i think some people suck and others don't. sure you have good and bad pieces, NONE of you can't deny it: some people might pick bad colors or string it in a weak fashion, but it's still kandi and it's still wonderful and deserves praise. nowhere did i say that... and assuming so really hardcore is upsetting me. I just wanted to get together, and have some fun. now it just seems i'm public enemy number one and i'll have to go back to trading with strangers on kandi trade if i ever want to again and not get cheated out.

im sorry if anything i said came off as making you the"enemy" i in no way shape or form consider you to be bad. your intentions were entirely pure and completely reasonable(to exhibit and share styles of kandi to further our kandi making skills), but personally i dont agree with your ideas about making it a competition. im really weird when it gets into the subjects of "art" which you did call it. i dont believe art should be judged at all. maybe because i never won an elementary school art show, but still i couldnt be happy with myself if i was involved in something that ranked the top pieces of art. personally when i design clothes, draw a picture, embroider something, make a backpack, or make kandi, i put my entire soul into it, just as im sure you and others do as well. i dont feel comfortable ranking works from the heart.

i never meant to disrespect you. i really didnt. but.. idk i felt a little disrespected by the idea of competition. maybe you and i are too passionate about our opposite opinions.

and as for wearing kandi, i dont wear it to show off. having more kandi than other people doesnt make me feel better and having less kandi than others doesnt make me feel worse. getting compliments about kandi is cool but its not what i look forward to at raves. the only thing i look forward to when it comes to kandi is seeing someones reaction when i give it to them (and if its special if i explain it to them) if they get compliments on it later thats their business but i find kandi to be more personal than as just decorations (im not saying you dont feel that its personal, just trying to get my ideas out there)

soccer. ive never been in sports, so maybe my sense of competition is under developed, but i can kind of relate what youre saying to marching band. and with this i can kind of justify the idea of a "competition" (and since i respect your opinions i will not leave out any conclusions i came to that agree/disagree with your ideas). In marching band we were judged (obviously) and music is a form of art (i think we can all agree =]) um... anyways we were separated into divisions (1-6A) depending on the size of our schools, kinda like how yours is divided into kinds of kandi (# of beads in a sense). When i first thought "ugh judging art!? thats so RAWR! it comes from the soul. how can you judge something like that?" i immediately thought of band and came to the conclusion that we werent really judged on our passion for the music or the colorguards dancing, but on the precision of our execution. in a way i guess you could consider your competition the judging of execution because... well im not really sure why but it made sense in my head...

oh and points do do stuff see "the curious penguin has a question" apparently you can rename people with them and play games and gamble. who knew?

and in no way do i feel "messed up" for not wanting to have an art competition. well i did run track a little (competed), competed in band, and in drama, but still i cant ignore the upset feeling in the pit of my stomach. (damn female intuition)

and heres where i admit that when i do get competitive, i get extremely competitive. i trained to be drum major for 2 years before i even auditioned and practiced in the mirror since 5th grade. i am totally not saying "omg im so amazing im gonna kick all your asses! it wouldnt be fair if i competed" im saying that 1) i dont feel comfortable because i still think competing/battling is... unsettling... when it comes to art especially (i believe kandi and glowsticking to be art) 2) i can be bitchy. and im trying to not be bitchy. ask larky its a big struggle. so i dont wanna turn into evil alouette 3) little friendly contests can be just that on the surface, but breed bad feelings beneath. and also... "if you give a mouse a cookie..."

arius i really do respect you totally and i consider you a friend. i would be honoured to trade kandi with you and to learn some of your techniques (seeing the wormy one actually helped me figure out how my friend made a MASSIVE cuff.. it looks like a sea eneminie(sp?)) i would really love to have a stronger voice of kandi kids on gsc too, before i had actually been warned that most ppl on gsc do not like/do not wear kandi... i got sad =( but to me competition is not my favorite way of getting our voice out there. you and i may have different views on the situation, but we're still both kandi kids =] one and the same.

you may not wear kandi to show off, but anytime you post a picture, you're doing that whether your intention is "omg! look at what i made!" or "hey, what do you guys think?". in essence, it's all really the same thing. numbers don't matter and i don't believe i ever said they did. i don't care if i'm wearing full arms because i ahve enough, or if wore every piece i had and it only covered my wrists. it's not the amount that matters. as far as going to raves and seeing peoples faces, not everyone is that lucky. i've never been to a rave, because there are none in a distance i'm allowed or able to travel. so my views of kandi, as objects to show my beliefs and as decorations (because they are, a crusifix is a decoration with meaning), may be different than yours. I've given away maybe 4 pieces face to face, usually to people i'm hanging with for the first time who don't know about the culture besides the little i explain to them. and it makes me feel good. but i don't have the opportunty to go out and party whenever, so perhaps it just has a little bit of a different meaning to me due to the fact i can only trade by mail, and even then of the 5 trades i've done, 2 have gone really sour on my end.

regarding art, that's just it though. there are so many style of art that do compete. I also am a member of my high school's marching band. I also consider playing, rehersing, and performing it, and being judged, as an art. it is a technical performance, but when i'm playing the music, and getting chills because my step is so dead on and that high C came out so clear, it's magical. But that's not what the judging or the trophies is about. but that doesn't make it any less special.

and i don't think we're all that different in opinions. we both love it and want to further the culture. I just didn't see this event as a big, and you did. that's the only difference i'm really finding. and your explaination of this contest would in essence be correct and a good way of explaining it: the execution of the art over the meaning. It was meant to appreciate the beauty of the pieces and to teach others, to show them, "hey, we can make this, I bet you can too!!" And to me, who has made probably 90%-95% of his own kandi because i can't trade easily or safely, they may tend to be more of trinkets that mean something (PLUR) than a connection (to others, friends, community) as it may be for all you who can trade and meet people to trade with.

when i said that about points, i shoulda said they don't do much :P cause they really don't do a whole lot in my opinion :D

drum major was kinda my thing for a long time too. and you know what? some of the most stuck up and insecure people i know got it over me, including someone who decided the day before that he was going to try out. yea, i felt really low when i didn't get it, but that's what competition is WHEN IT ISN'T FOR FUN (captitalized for emphasis, not yelling). when it really matters, to your heart and soul, that you win and can never lose, then it's a battle. that's the championship game, not the scrimmage.

EDIT: i'd really like to be friends and to trade too. to me, competition has always been a great way to meet people. i go to a christian music festival every summer and the best way for me to meet people is to join a game of ultimate frisbee with like, 20 other people. i'll meet more people doing that than jumping up and down in a mosh pit, ya know? so to me, competition makes sense if it's all just for fun (wow, that was actually a good way of expressing that :P ). but yea, kandi kids forever, right? ^_^

If I came off as harsh, then I apoligize as well. You are not enemy number one dude, not at all. trust me.

One, I have stopped dealing with kanditrade.net. I origionally went there to learn and to be apart of it, but Its nothing but full of 90% bullshit drama, flaming, stealing, or name-calling and only 10% kandi. I tried to deal with that and for a while its no big deal. But for like 5 months there was no new tutorials, designs, hell barely anyone was even putting up pictures of their kandi. Here theres new tuts, vids, and really cool information liteally every other day. Thats why I really am working hard on these kandi videos. Ive had alot of people message me about my kandi and want to learn but was too afraid to go on kt. granted alot of the drama is self created due to idiots, but theres quite a few times where some members lash at each other for no reason whatsoever.

two, ive had some problems with competition for a loonnggg time, as of outside of glowsticking. In middle school I began martial arts, no big deal. I got to a pretty high rank before the teacher had me join their competition team. I though it would be fun, no biggies, get to travel around and win trophies and shit. huge mistake. The people I went against were pure insane, flipping, great stamina, and they were just perfect. Once I saw what I was up against, I trained hard and strong. I gave it my all, but every single time, I either lost or was second to last. Hell I was doing shit with weapons that noone in my area was doing, but no matter what I did, I kept losing. After that, It got to the point of not even trying anymore.

On top of that, I was getting into highschool, and my parents pushed me so fucking hard to be all a's. They wanted me to compete in all this shit but I was already frustrated with martial arts, that it got really bad. My life went downhill from there for along time, but thats another day.

Ive always had problems with competitions my entire life. I've always been the fat white kid who isnt good at sports, not the best in school, just.....there. My parents pushed me to do all this shit, until finally i just got tired of it.

I bet thats the main reason why I got into glowsticking. The fact that its based around the values of equality and being open to anyone. Noones better than anyone. We are always learning, and always growing.

Besides, we kandi kids are a rare site on this board. We all need to stick together and share our love and creativity with crafts to everyone else, not for judgement, but to pass on a unique tradition that has single handedly given the rave scene its recognition.

agreed on kanditrade. it was a good long while ago they ran that contest i mentioned, and about that time i quit after destroysound and i went head to head for awhile. now that i know how to do 3Ds, i don't have a use for KT anymore.

ya know, i've kinda been the same way with soccer. never quite good enough, especially in high school. my freshman and sophomore year i was 2nd string goalie. never got to play. junior year i started; on JV. senior year, i played 20 minutes my whole season. but for me, being active and on a team and a part of the competition, even as the 12th man (meaning the support from the bench), for me it was worth it. my summer league i had a bit more lee-way and played more, which is where the connections i talked about were built from moreso than highschool ball. but like i put in my edit to Alouette, competition is my thing. i wasn't so aware that it was also a big negative too, because it is so big for me. so that's where my decision for this came from, like i explained above. i hope that makes sense, because i hear where you're coming from. if i didn't have a genuine love for soccer, i had no purpose playing. but i did, and that plus my love for the competiton, was just what fueled me. some of my best friendships came out of competing (even in band against my fellow section mates :P )

I hope my point of view kinda makes sense. I do understand where you guys are all coming from too, now i'm just kinda explaining myself more (redundantly i suppose by now).

and thanks for not hating on me. that really woulda broke me cause it is so rare for me to find kandi kids that i CAN connect with and stuff.

yay this makes me happy! =] the air is way less tense. and i have an amazing idea. well it might be amazing... my silly sewing side is gonna show for a second. (totally doesnt go with the competition sry

when people make quilts in groups each person does an individual square, but sticks to the overall theme of the quilt (see "how to make an american quilt" its a move =] theres scandal and stories.. but a chick flick) anyways what if we got maybe the 3 of us maybe more, to do something like that. at first i thought of having one person start something, send it to another have them work on it, send it to another etc. but that might get crazy. so what if we all made pieces of kandi (if 3 ppl participate, each person makes 2) and they have a theme or something and we trade from there! maybe it could work?

arius. i bet you played trumpet. why? cuz trumpets talk about high c's and dont think its just a drink... and cuz trumpets compete like crazy =P specially for first chair.

for me competition... well growing up i was always second best. i was the ugly, dorky, fat girl. then i kinda evolved from the ugly duckling and was still second best. ("youre hott but jalene is damn sexy" what my first bf said to dump me) so ive had that engraved in my brain. i would get second chair, be the runner up for the solo, have good grades but not a 4.0, etc...

and about the kandi trade thingie... ive never participated in that, haha i tried to make an account once but it wouldnt let me so i gave up that fast... as for learning, i jsut dissect what i get from people and mess around (by dissect i mean stretch, not cut apart. that would be silly) so i'd really love to share tips and ideas with you. the one person i asked to help me once said it would take to long to teach me and she didnt have time. do u have time? =]

I concur, I mean, we wouldn't be getting anywhere trying to judge the best kandi out there. I would, however, like to see what people have created. I don't know what I did with it, but I made a kandi gauntlet.(yes that's right, covers the whole forearm :P)

did anyone notice that the person who i believe was referred to as the one "placed on the pedestal" hasnt even replied or been mentioned directly? (unless i missed something)

i think its kinda cool/interesting/funny that someone could not be on the thread but still cast their shadow over its participants (and i mean that in a not bad way. i just couldnt think of a good way to phrase it)

*shrugs* i'm not hating on her. it was just a fact and everyone knows it *shrugs*

and lol to the trumpet thing ^_^ yea, we're pretty cool, doing what we do. though i should have been talking about my high E's (it's the note i'm working on now :P i can get the C perfectly 10/10 times and the D perfectly about 8/10 times, but i always mess up that E!!!) best part about us competing in my section: no chairs. we don't do first chair, second chair, all that in my band XD

If you ever want to ask questions or anything, please feel free. since joining GSC, i've had maybe 15ish people randomly PM me and ask me how i made the piece in my signiture :P so i love helping out, ESPECIALLY with kandi! :) as far as the group trade (KT did those alot and i actually really liked that set up they had), i'd love to do one... set a theme and go with it. I think KT had the kandi all sent to one person, usually an admin, before a certain date and then that person just sent it out. with only three or four people, i'm sure we could just mail it to each other. the reason KT does it the way they do is so that someone who doesn't send out doesn't get any either. but i think if we just sent a date to send out by, it'd work out.... and then kindly harass if they don't sent out!!! :P KT got very little correct with their site, but group trades they handled VERY well. sad they can't just grow up XD

I think as long as this contest doesn't reach the boundaries of "friendly" this is okay..... I do feel like sometimes even here on GS.C critiquing is NO good.... My husband who is a member of the community, quit posting because of critiques....

Art should NEVER be critiqued.... ever..... it sets up for too much disappointment and altogether apathy for the whole of it.... if that makes any sense....

I do think that this contest may be okay if it is done in the right spirit.... And I am willing to donate a large piece for the winner of the contest and some smaller pieces for second and third place as well.... Then you get more than just points!

Lemme know what you guys think.
