How Sweet It Is 2009

Here is the statement published on the How Sweet website:

To address the capacity issues, the fire marshals closed the doors to the Citrus building because they felt there was a safety issue. During an event, if the fire marshal determines there are too many people in any of the buildings, it is their decision to close the doors and refuse to allow more people to enter. We apologize to anyone who came and could not get into the Citrus building to see their favorite DJ, we are as unhappy about it as you are. However, when the fire marshal decides to control entry to a room, we have to comply.

The main concern was not that there were too many people at the event, but that people were choosing to sit on the floors of the dance areas instead of dancing. People sitting on the floor took up the same space that three or four standing dancers could have enjoyed. Not only does sitting kill the vibe and fragment the dance floor, it keeps others from getting to hear their favorite artists.

We are increasingly frustrated by this trend of people taking up dance floor space by sitting down and we've already taken some steps to address this problem. We placed prominent messages on the event guides distributed at How Sweet It Is discouraging people from sitting on the dance floors and even went so far as to have security circulate in the crowd and make people who were sitting down get up and move. We are now coming up with new ways to reverse this trend and will be trying some different approaches at future events.

Thanks again to everyone who came to How Sweet It Is - we'll see you next time!

Here's my review of the night + the whole not sitting on the dance floor dealie.

Personally, I had a freaking blast! The set up was amazing, the lights were amazing, the djs were good. I found the 15 minute intermission weird but it was ok because they still had a beat going. I'm actually really surprised that the venue actually CARED enough for their attendees to have security roaming around making people stand up. Its a DANCE FLOOR, not a sit down in cuddle puddles and lay down floor. I'm glad they locked up the stage because it was getting way too overcrowded and way too hot in there. It is unfortunate that some people didn't get to see certain artists, but seriously, there were other stages with awesome artists there too. I'm glad that promoters/venues are finally caring about the safety of people unlike some promoters (*coughgoventurescough*). Also, there was a 5th stage opened with encore djs playing for those that got locked out so I think that was awesome of them. As for the new ways to reverse the whole sitting down trend... I don't think they could successfully do that unless they decided to expand the dance floor or it was outdoors. Having chairs/couches on the dance floor takes too much room and would cause a chain reaction of people sitting and spreading throughout the floor so I'm curious as how they're going to approach and fix this problem this later.

Nice review, and to be quite honest I find it weird how everyone's blaming the promoter when it was the Fire Marshall and Venue that decide when to close a stage at a party.

Why would you pay upwards of 60+ dollars to sit on a dance floor anyway?

On another note, what other promoter opens up another stage last minute when they find out the Fire Marshal may be closing some stages due to people sitting on the floor?

No one knew about them opening the other stage though. We certainly didn't, and we were there. We got locked out so we had to go to the outdoors house stage b/c we couldn't get into the indoor stages.

They could have made an announcement or something when they weren't playing music for like 20 min.

They did make an announcement, twice if I remember correctly. Both times during that weird intermission thing.

I think the promoters did a great job. Security was hella cool. The lines moved fast. The stages were all directed well. The lights and sound were hella sikkk! It was a cool factor of 10. Like a boss.
