Lira Yin pres. Transient Illusion

102 posts in this topic

I actually first used the name Transient Illusion in 2006 to describe a mix I threw together in Audacity.

Fast forward to November 12, 2008, when I needed a music fix to cheer me up. Decided to finally give in to a long-harbored interest.

 These were live sets recorded back-to-back the night before SSBMU.

 This playlist was from a live broadcast of Transient Illusion on stickam.com/liralei following a live broadcast of MadRaverRai's Tainted Transmission on stickam.com/madraverrai.

 If the tracklist seems a bit funky, that's because I chose the tracks live, on the fly, without any prior planning. But I feel like it's a very good example of my style and taste in music.

 Tips and critiques VERY welcome. I self-taught for under 2 hours, after all. It doesn't sound bad, though. Please have a listen.

 There are a couple of mistakes in here. Like the last transition. Oh god that was BAD.

 I can beat match, I can change tempo, I can kinda transition, I can screw around with crossfades, EQ, etc. I like messing with breakdowns. What should I learn next? How do I change key, & how should I learn to use effects?

I'm downloading it now, but I could already tell I hate it. ;) Haha, lirawr.

I'll let you know what I think as soon as I listen; right now I'm falling asleep on my keyboard.

Havent gotten to listen to your mix, but here's some advice I give to people who start getting into djing.

What I always recommend to new djs is to work on beatmatching. all the other stuff such as blending, transitions, programming, etc comes later with experience. a good way to practice beatmatching is practice playing your songs at different bpms, and seeing if you can beatmatch. For example, one day you'll play "insert song" at 125, then the next day at 130.

Are you planning to use strictly VDJ? Or eventually use CDJs/Decks?

Also try to see how long you can hold a mix before your beats start drifting. I used to try to hold my mixes for at least 2 minutes, and when it would start to drift, Id adjust accordingly. Its good to train your ears in that sense.

damnit, zin, I need ACTUAL feedback! ;)

re: Mr. Clean: I'd like to move to decks eventually, because VDJ's so automated I don't feel as if I'm actually learning real control. I don't really botch up any transition spectacularly until the very last one. Thanks for the advice; maybe you can offer some more detailed tips after you've listened?

I'm LOVING mixing. Spent another hour fiddling around when I was supposed to be working. Shit, I'm supposed to be doing work now! :P

I learned how to beatmatch on on a pair of old dual cd players and a shitty ass beringer mixer. After a few months I got a Hercules Dj Console Mk2 from a friend and that's when my transition to digital from analog style mixing happened.

I do like certain aspects of analog equipment so I have a hybrid system now. Utilizing a hybrid mixer with analog effects and extra analog effect boxes like the kaoss pad kp3. It all depends on what you'd like to accomplish.

Some DJs aspire to rip it sikkkkk the old fashioned way and do everything manually. Utilizing years of experience which can only be obtained through practice in actual clubs and gigs or home sets. Other DJs like to do live remixes on Ableton, do multiple live mashups on pretty much any software rather than worrying about beatmatching, key matching, and other time consuming techniques. It will free you up to do other things, such as Glowsticking in my case, or multiple live remixes and mashups like Deadmau5 or Sasha.

I suggest this which was my old setup, I'm upgrading AGAIN soon. lol

Whatever path you choose, I'm sure you'll have people who can give you a hand. I've got a Hercules Dj Console Mk2 for sale as well as a Torq Xponent if Marcus doesn't buy it this friday.

Comment on the Mix

The mix was pretty smooth for two hours actually. I think you utilize the crossfader a lot right? How did you EQ without a console. That shit was mad difficult for me on VDJ that I had to get a console to really rock out. It was a nice mix though. Congrats. Hope you keep goin.

Thanks, Rai. :) Yeah, I used the crossfader a LOT-- I'd like to learn how to mix it up a bit more, but eh. Any suggestions?

Also, if you have any old equips / external HDs / etc etc etc. I'd be interested. Not sure if I've got the budget at the moment, but let me know. I'm running low on space for music definitely, & I'd like to expand past VDJ eventually.

if you know anyone with equipment, id suggest practicing on an actual mixer. im dling your set as i type so ill leave feedback in a bit:) a curious question, are you doing this for fun, or would you like to play out at gigs and such?

For now, I'm doing it for fun & for pure, sincere love of the music-- I'm a college student living on a pretty isolated campus, and won't really have the freedom to move around 'til I graduate. But I do love music, and I sing for a variety of different projects & genres, and getting to know music on a more technical level never hurts. I was a classical musician (violinist) & now I want to understand EDM better. :)

I'm open to anything that happens, though. There aren't many skilled DJs on campus (I really, really wince at some of the transitions I hear) & I'd be up for playing a party or two for friends-- I also love it when other people enjoy music.

Rai's offered to let me mix the next time I'm in the area, so I'll get some actual practice in eventually. Going to find out who has equips on campus, too.

There are many different ways to mix tracks but no one does it the same. You'll learn your own techniques eventually. Since you're comin to my gig you can mix a little bit at around like 10:00pm and I could show you some things. I'm not gonna start rockin out till 11:00pm when the party really starts.

I have a hercules DJ Console Mk2 that you should use. It'd definitely help with learning how to EQ, us the volume faders, and crossfader. Doing it on a mouse and pc is impossible. It won't sound as good as having a real mixer or a DJ console. You definitely should get an external HD because your boy the MadRaver has over 300 gigs of House and Trance tracks and 80% of them are 320 quality.

I have two external HDs both 500 gigs. Must move to a 1 Terabyte one soon. Been getting an average of about 8-10 gigs a week lately. Then I sort and delete what I don't like. This includes downloads and purchases. You MUST support the EDM scene by purchasing tracks even though you can get it for free.

I use two DJ/Producer torrent sites which are invite only, trackitdown.net, beatport, audiojelly, techno cz forums. I use a lot of different places.

CDJ1000 Mk3s are what I'm getting also. i used to have the 800 mk2s. Going for a hybrid setup which utilizes two mixers( DJM 800 and Xone 3D) 2 CDJ 1000 mk2s and a macbook pro. Should be awesome for tag team sets.

...y'all are gonna be the death of me. The very, very premature, badly-timed death. Should I be on guard when I come back home to FL? :P Just kidding, much love! I'll be making a new (better) mix during Thanksgiving weekend, when I'm not dying of collegiate overload.
