After serving as the only high intensity sticks for glowstickers to use for over 7 years, Extremeglow.com has finally stopped selling their 30 minute High Intensity Yellow and White glowsticks..... But what is the reason for this?
For discussion on this topic click here. Extremeglow has been the main source for GSC to buy glowsticks from since the beginning starting with Cyalume glowsticks, so why would these sticks stop being sold? The following ideas may be the reasons as to why this has happened.
In the beginning, just about every stick was no more than a dollar but slowly sticks started to raise in price. The 5 minute Ultra Orange, for example, started going up to $1.20 then soon to $1.30 per stick. Despite these increases, many members continued to purchase the sticks since they became so attached over the years. Recently, however, there was a major jump in boosting the price all the way up to $1.60. Not only the 5 minute ultra became expensive... almost every other cyalume stick raised its price as well including once cheap sticks such as the orange and red 8 hour industrials. Since glowstickers generally buy in bulk, a change from $1.00 to $1.60 is better represented by the difference between $40.00 and $64.00. With this increase in price, and new High intensity sticks coming out at a very low cost, many have begun to switch to the GL Ultras. The GL Ultras offer benefits that the Cyalume's never had, but also have some draw backs. The 5 Minute Green out does the 30 minute yellow/green cyalume in brightness by far by being the brightest green stick to date as well as having a much stronger tip which many stringers see as a necessity. This green, however, in no way matches the unique color the yellow/green cyalume had as can be seen in Spazzman's freehand glowsticking video. Instead this stick has a basic solid green which many can be seen as lacking although some do prefer it. Quite contrary to the GL's improvement in the green stick, the white has much room for improvement. While the tip is still stronger, the light is in no way more intense. It is about the same or less than the 30 minute white cyalume.... but unlike the cyalume, it has a MUCH shorter life. The "5 minute" title hardly ever is accurate in the measurement of a sticks duration, but in this instance it is much closer than your averge glowsticker would guess. You can see the cyalume glowstick being used in this glowstringing video. The change in the cyalume formula from yellow/green to simply yellow might have been another big reason for people to stop buying the sticks since it simply did not have the sticks same cool unique feel as it once did.
